A Chinese Ghost Story (21 April 2011)

A Chinese Ghost Story, or as the poster suggests A Chinese Fairy Tale is a hauntingly, helpless romantic and action-packed movie.

The story is about a demon hunter named Yan Chek Ha (Louis Koo) who falls in love with a demon named Siu Sin (Liu Yi Fei) while pursuing and sealing the Tree Demon (Wai Ying Hung) on Black Mountain. However, since its the law of nature does not allow a human and a demon to be together, Chek Ha seals her memory of them. Years later, a government official Ling Choi Sin (Yu Shao Qun), who promised the villagers at the foot of Black Mountain to solve their water problems, stumbled upon her and the same love story starts again. However, Siu Sin's captor, the Tree Demon, refuses to let her go and a fierce battle ensues between her and the demon hunters. Followed by that is a complicated love triangle between Choi Sin, Siu Sin, and Chek Ha.

I've always liked love stories like this. Romance in a beautiful fantasy world, action-packed, and bits of humor. However, this movie could be improved more as it feels light on its scary side. CGI effects are quite impressive, while the fight and ending scenes are great. Action and humor scenes are just a little too much to bear when you'd expect to see a ghost story.

The only reason anyone would watch A Chinese Ghost Story, is because of Liu Yi Fei. She seems to shine more than superstar Louis Koo, as she perfectly portrays an innocent, suffering character. In terms of acting, Wai Ying Hung triumphs above all as the main villian. Liu Yi Fei tries to project more emotion in her dialogues, but fails (you will notice it). Yu Shao Qun's acting is very wooden, while Louis Koo incorporates a little too much humor in his scenes.

Overall, despite its shortcomings, A Chinese Ghost Story is perfect for those looking for a light entertainment. And if you have seen the original 1987 film, this isn't worthy of a remake.

My rating: 3.5/5 (lower if you have seen the original 1987 film)
