Thor (28 April 2011)

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) defies his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) by declaring war on their enemy, the Frost Giants of Jotunheim, breaking the truce that lasted many years. For his punishment, he is stripped of his powers and cast out of his home, a beautiful surreal world of Asgard, to Earth to learn his lesson and live with the humans. During his stay, he falls in love with scientist Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and is taught the much-needed lessons, and must use his new-found strength to defend Earth from his evil manipulative brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

Chris Hemsworth perfectly hammers his way as Thor with a good balance of strength and charisma. As Odin, Anthony Hopkins has a heavy presence in the film, with his portrayal as a wise speaking character in his films. Natalie Portman, having played various personalities in her films, plays the sweet determined scientist girl who falls for a good-looking alien proves that she has the talent.

CGI effects are great, especially in visualizing the realm of Asgard. The action scenes were just slightly above average, though I felt it could have been better in terms of visual FX and momentum. One example is the battle between the god of thunder and the Destroyer, which seemed biased towards Thor, and could have been longer.

There is a good amount of humor when Thor first arrived on Earth, not too much thankfully. The storyline is good, though I feel that it could have been better. It is also good to see that it also gave hints that its linked to the Avengers family. Well at least a little. There's the SHIELD agent that was in Iron Man, and an unclear mention of Bruce Banner, aka Hulk.

Overall its a great movie to watch, and highly recommended.

My rating: 4/5
