The Lost Bladesman (5 May 2011)

The Lost Bladesman tells the story of the infamous General Guan Yu. From how he turned against Cao Cao and the emperor whom he served temporarily, and remained loyal to his sworn brother Liu Bei, till his death fighting the rival states Wei and Wu.

Who would perfectly don the armor of General Guan Yu in The Lost Bladesman? Why, none other than superstar Donnie Yen of course! After witnessing his presence and slick moves in Ip Man and Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen, I'm glad they picked him for the role. But just exactly how many times we have to see Donnie Yen on the silver screen?

Jiang Wen as the tyrannical Cao Cao steals the show with his ability to instill a sense of intimidation in all the scenes he appears in. The supporting characters also encourage ticket sales, as they are played by Sun Li (Fearless), Andy On (True Legend) and many other Mainland artistes (Li Zonghan, Shao Bing and Hei Zi amongst them).

But the highlight of this movie is of course,
spectacular action scenes. Guan Yu's famous expedition of "crossing five passes and slaying six generals" plays out with each sequence showcasing unique martial arts. Action fans will be pleased to see various blades, spears, crossbows and arrows on display, as they come into use during the countless fight scenes which are choreographed by Donnie Yen himself.

The drama is frequently intense and serious, with cleverly written dialogues written by directors Alan Mak and Felix Chong.

The Lost Bladesman is definitely a recommended movie to watch.
