Green Lantern (17 June 2011)

After months of speculation, Green Lantern finally comes to life on the big screen. With a budget costing to about $200million, its meant to be one of the top recent movies in 2011.

Hal Jordan, an adventurous, and boastful pilot was chosen by the Ring sent out by Abin Sur of Sector 2814. Abin Sur is the only dying survivor among the many Green Lanterns who battled Parallax, a monstrous being that feeds on fear. Hal reluctantly joins the Green Lantern Corps on Planet Oa, and has to battle an enemy who is threatening the whole universe.

Personally, this new movie is disappointing. Why Ryan Reynolds? He's too comedic, even in his looks to play a serious character like Green Lantern. For some reason, I still think that I'm watching The Proposal(great movie by the way).

But the same can't be said for its special effects. As Thor has Asgard, Green Lantern has Oa. The planet is  beautifully rendered in this movie, quite comparable to Asgard. Surreal, majestic, unimaginable. However, when it comes to Hal battling Parallax, unimaginable becomes childish. A hot wheels car and track to save the helicopter? Springs to lift the oil tank? Come on. Not to mention its predictable and messy "hero-discover-powers-then-saves-damsel-and-world" story.

Overall, while its potentially one of the top recent movies in 2011, its predictable story and unnecessary distractions brought it down to just about average. Just watch it for fun.

Movie ratings: 3/5
